The Mask of the Four Selves
It is surprising to see how little has been written
concerning the Four Selves, and more interesting to see that even fewer
are even aware of the secondary aspect of the Four Selves. If one were to
discuss the self as an operating unit they soon come to see that there are
four components to the human being Mind Heart Body and Spirit.
Collectively I see these four parts as mere Masks in respect to the
secondary four which are the main operating components. Let us now expand
this in order to clarify just what I mean.
The Mask of Mind
Mind is that portion of ourselves responsible for reason
and thought and the retrieval of memory which is found part in brain and
part in body. Psychologist have segmented this part into even more
segments and given each segment a name and assigned them a function.
For our purposes let us say that the total conglomerated
known material on this subject forms the basis for the Primary
consciousness or the mask of mind. This includes the subconscious mind,
id, ego etc.
I maintain this to be true on the grounds that the mind
has been studied only from the perspective of another mind but only in the
same state ...which is the analysis criteria rather than experientially
which would require a different format altogether to investigate. Individuals who require empirical data to analyze would not be able to do
so experientially because there is no format for experiential study
analysis. I am suggesting here that the whole of self knowledge forms only
the mask of the real mind which underlies it. This Secondary mind can not
be described but is itself the “describer” or Witness to all thoughts on
all levels of consciousness. It is awareness itself.
Here I will say that the real mind underlies the one which
we relate to on an ongoing basis and forms the daily consciousness.
For the sake of simplicity only Secondary mind, which is the Witness Self,
is the real mind. The mind that describes, analyzes reasons or deduces is
Primary and forms the material substance which the Witness Mind perceives
through. The Secondary mind is not to be confused with the subconscious.
In deep meditation the mind can witness the sub conscious in motion.
A reminder.....this is not the complete version of this
information which would be too lengthy for the purpose of this
explanation.
The Mask of Heart
“The heart is the centre of the emotions”, this is another
misconception caused by tradition rather than direct observation. It can
be demonstrated that a mind can make images as quickly as the words are
spoken or it can associate an image to a memory or an event as quickly as
it can be flashed in front of it.
The heart however, is unable to make such transitions
without the use of image or verbal descriptors. As an example make the
following images: bird, fish, boat, house, tree, dog. Now......feel the
following as quickly as you made the images: feel happy, sad, lonely,
connected, aware, creative. You will find that it is easier to create
images associated with things than it is to experience emotional
sensations without the corresponding thought.. Now try again....think of
something that makes you feel happy, sad, lonely, connected, aware,
creative. The moment that you think of the thing it elicits the
appropriate emotional response. The emotion follows the thought.
It is for this very reason that our feelings can be so
confusing when we experience one without having had a thought of an idea
on a conscious level....we don’t know why we feel this way. Though it is
difficult to impossible to quantify an abstract thing as the emotions, it
becomes evident that ninety percent of ALL emotions are mentally
generated. This constitutes the Mask of the Heart. The remaining ten
percent would constitute the True Heart.
The critical ten percent are emotions that are not
generated by thoughts, but by direct experiences.
We prefer to call these emotions Virtues. Here is a list of examples:
-
Beauty – it is
not a thought it is a sensation which can be overwhelming and/or
transcendental.
-
Truth – it is
not a thought but comes as a sensation of inner knowing – a sense of
rightness
-
In both of these
cases neither is cognitive one might say they are pre-cognitive.
Here are a few more examples of Virtues: harmony, balance,
presence, being, compassion, awe, character, quality, honour, virtue itself,
....just to list a few. Most people lack the capacity to experience these
Virtues because they are being drowned out by the emotions generated by the
Primary Mind. It has been found that when the mind is made quiet and the
internal dialogue is halted these virtues emanate naturally from and to the
universe without effort or conditions.
The Mask of Body
There are many books written on physiology, anatomy, diet,
hygiene, and the overall operations and functions of the organs and systems
of the human body. For this reason it is unnecessary to go into a long
winded explanation.
The body as a whole, is the best understood of the four
selves; the mind being second, the emotions third and the spirit being
the least understood. Since this article is concerned with the secondary
aspects of these Masks, we will begin by clarifying the primary and
Secondary aspects of the Body.
The Primary aspects consists of all systems which respond to
volition i.e. the moving of limbs, eating, drinking, sleeping (but not the
process of sleep), excretion (but not the process of excretion). The
Secondary, essentially consist of the autonomic nervous system and
parasympathetic system, i.e. heartbeat, breathing (when not under volition),
digestion, and other systems such as the immune system, lymphatic,
alimentary, circulation, excretion, etc.
It can be demonstrated that an acute awareness can become
sensitive enough to apply volition to the secondary systems. An example
would be a Brahmin holy man enduring hunger, thirst and even burial for
several weeks. Through discipline and practises such as yoga, tai chi, qui
gong, martial arts, etc. the body can be made to respond in extraordinary
ways, providing examples of “superhuman” feats of strength, endurance and
control. A bleeding wound can be made to stop at will. Spontaneous healing
can occur. Instantaneous regression of cancer and various terminal diseases.
All of these examples have been clinically recorded all over the world.
In order to access the secondary aspect one must in the same
manner as they act on their primary, act on their secondary though practise
and discipline. The Primary or the Mask of the Body hides or shields access
to the Secondary body which is the domain of what we consider “superhuman”.
Through discipline and practice one can access the Secondary, any
experienced athlete can tell you how to access this reserve, one need not go
to India or to the Himalayas to find a Guru - all it takes is devotion!
The Mask of Spirit
This is truly the most difficult one to explain. Essentially
the Mind, Heart and Body could be considered to constitute the Mask of
Spirit. But it would also include the sense of self or I, ones own
individual sense of being.
In order for this not to become too abstract it will be made
brief. In short, the I individuality which makes one alive, or one's
individual life force, would constitute Primary Spirit. Secondary Spirit is
the Divine spark which clearly makes ones life possible. It is The Source of
all sources, it is the unnameable the unknowable and ever present. Some
might call this God, the “isness” will suffice.
A metaphor would be useful in making this description a little more
accessible. Imagine an ocean, vast and eternal. A wave emerges on its
surface. The water contained in the wave would constitute individual life
force, from it’s perspective it may seem separate from the ocean. Secondary
spirit could be likened to the water itself not the water as the ocean, but
the water itself, including the wave and all of its forms which can never be
separate.
It is possible through spiritual disciplines to come into
contact with our own Primary spirit through the vast ocean but not without
losing our own individual sense of self. It is impossible however, to come
into contact with our Secondary Spirit and retain any sense of individuality
what so ever. One can not return from the light when one has become it. This
could be called enlightenment.
One becomes "En-Lightened" when they throw off the old forms
of Heart Body Mind and Spirit. This is accessible to everyone regardless of
their conditions. Contact with Divine Source is easily made when we allow
ourselves to be engulfed and devoured by the awe of creation, or through the
road called beauty or the sacred path called love. This IS the stuff we are
made of...Love dreaming itself.
